How to Create an Elevated Space for Dressy or Casual Taste

Many of my clients aren’t sure what their style or taste is, so I’ll ask them about their closet other purchasing decisions they have made. You’d be surprised at what you can learn about someone by what they wear!

Casual

Are you the client that shows up in a great pair of jeans and a t-shirt with a fun bag? Then you are probably more casual. If you love a really great expensive pair of jeans with a Target t-shirt, or a blazer that’s cuffed up, I’d say your style is more casual. There is less hairspray and less fuss about things being exactly where they should be. You also appreciate the imperfection in asymmetry.

Color:

Causal homes are more earthy and therefore clay tones are used more - the rich brownish orangey red tones.

Floors:

The entry could be a wood or limestone floor. It might be a lighter floor like white oak (verses marble like in more dressy homes). The floors won’t show much dirt and are designed for LIVING IN.

Fabrics:

Casual homes love a good OPEN-WEAVE LINEN. It has a casualness to it but also a really lovely chicness! It also has a relaxing effect on a space

Art:

Casual homes incorporate a mix of different artworks - just focus on finding pieces you love.

Rugs:

A mix of patterns and colors tend to create a more causal look. Just remember to select the right size for your space.

DRESSY

Are you the client that shows up in heels, a freshly pressed shirt, shiny earrings, and a Chanel handbag? If so, then you are most likely in the “Dressy” category! This look is considered “timeless.” A dressy home-owner likes their marbles high-contrast and POLISHED.

Antiques: You usually like things that are higher up on legs, that have shiny hardware with an inlay. Mirrors are great because you look good in that pressed shirt and you want to see that reflection. It brings in the shine.

Color:

You’ll see more jewel tones because they add richness and formality. Rooms that are darker do have a bit for formality.

Floors:

You don’t care about having to clean it often…you love the elegant DARK walnuts.

Fabrics:

You’d love Wet Velvet… a velvet that has a shine and luster to it, It’s also called the Queens Velvet. Incorporate silk drapes instead of linen for your windows.

Art:

Original works of art and especially paintings create a very dressy, elegant space.

Rugs:

Wools and silks make the room dressy. When you’re looking at this hand-knotted antique silk rug, It’s like looking at fine jewelry
