Styling with Accessories

Books

When it comes to styling with accessories, books are like a rug. I particularly love art and design books because I’m an interior designer. Collect books that reflect what you’re into so your spaces can reflect who you are.

To be clear, not talking about novels here, but large-scale cocktail books with big and lovely looking spines. You want them to that take up space so you can put something else on the book and come across as a good stylist. This may sound a little crazy, but recommend that each home have at least 20 books!

Non-directional Items

Pieces that look good from every angle are called non-directional items. For example, a picture frame is NOT non-directional because it only is viewed from one side. Here are a few examples of non-directional pieces:

  • Bowls - great for if you want you can put stuff in it while maintaining a low center of gravity so it doesn't fall over as easily

  • Pottery - peices that you’ve bought during your travels or that have been passed down are lovely conversation starters!

  • Sculptural Objects - crystals bring a necessary dimension into a space. I also just love having a few see-through pieces here and there because they add elegance to a room with their wet-like glimmer.

Trays

Another rug-like piece would be a good tray! Try to find the largest one that will fit your surface! You want to avoid trays that are circular or oval because you can't put coffee books in them.

Candles

I think you’ll agree…candles are a must! But don’t buy small candles, buy the biggest you can — tall and preferably having three wicks! If you are trying to decide between candles and diffusers, I suggest using candles where you can keep an eye on it (coffee tables and kitchen islands). Whereas entryways and powder baths are a good place for a diffuser.

Greenery

Last but not least, you will need greenery throughout your entire home, faux or real! These organic pieces will really liven up your space. Remember - the bigger, the better!
