Why Now is the Best Time to Foster Our Love for Home.

You may be thinking I’m crazy for starting a business during this unpredictable and unprecedented time. But let me tell you why I think it’s the best time. More than ever, I see a need for connection, comfort, laughter, and inspiration. I get the sense that we all want to look back at these challenging days knowing we loved each other well and reflected on the meaning of “staying home” like never before.

I get the sense that we all want to look back at these hard days knowing we loved each other well and reflected on the meaning of “staying home” like never before.

I’ve had a lot of time this season to sit with myself — like actually sit on the couch, and listen to my thoughts as I drink my morning coffee. I was at a point in my life where I needed to make a decision about my career in counseling: should I go to graduate school and pursue a professional career? I’d thought about this before, but this time was different. Working from home made me realize how much I like it. I sat there thinking about what I want my future “daily” to look like. I took the time actually daydream. I asked myself, If I could do anything, what would I do?

I’ve had a lot of time this season to sit with myself — like actually sit on the couch, and listen to my thoughts as I drink my morning coffee.

In the quiet of my home, my thoughts took me back to my childhood dream of becoming an interior designer. I finally acknowledged parts of my identity I had ignored: I could watch Fixer Upper over and over; my Pinterest feed was all home inspiration and I couldn't pin enough; and there’s this constant desire in me to decorate any room, and redecorate my own home again and again.

For the first time in a while, I had let myself dream, without shaming myself for dreaming “too big”.  When I voiced these thoughts to my husband, he said, “You can do this, and I think you should go for it.” That, my friends, is how this business was born: cozy at home during the Coronavirus outbreak, accepting myself, and connecting with family.

That is what staying home is all about for me. I agree, it’s really good to get outside — I miss traveling so much. Moments of inspiration can hit you when you climb to the mountaintop. However, home is always there when we need it. We all have memories of coming home after a long day and feeling so relieved. Memories of coming home from a trip, or school, or even vacation and saying, “It’s good to be home.” Home is where you feel safe, inspired, and welcome. It thrives when people come together, and love and laughter overflows out of it’s doors.

We spend so much time at home, especially during this season. Yet, how often do our homes make us feel stressed or ashamed because it doesn't meet our needs or reflect who we are?

Home is where you feel safe, inspired, and welcome. It thrives when people come together, and love and laughter overflows out of it’s doors.

Maybe you’ve tried to decorate your new home but it still feels cold and unwelcoming. Maybe the kids are always making messes and so the thought of that kitchen remodel only makes you stressed. Maybe the sentimental wall decor that used to make you smile is now annoying to look at because it's been there for fifteen years.

Here’s a challenge for you: shake off that shame and guilt for caring about your physical home. Now, don't go using this as an excuse to spend a ton of money shopping, or to pout with discontentment. The goal is not a Pinterest-perfect showroom, you just want your home to be comfortable, inspiring, and welcoming for you and your family — that’s not selfish, that loving! And a little side note: whatever home you find yourself in now, love it, own it, dream about it; don’t wait until you get that “dream house” to make it special for everyone you share it with.

The goal is not a Pinterest-perfect showroom, you just want your home to be comfortable, inspiring, and welcoming for you and your family — That’s not selfish, that loving!

That is why now is the best time to foster our love for home. Because right now, we need our homes to not be just a shelter, but a place of peace and inspiration. My home gave me a place to reflect and dream, what will yours do for you and your family this season?

Cheering you on,

Taylor
